GAF vs. Owens Corning vs. CertainTeed — Which Shingle Lasts Longest in Oklahoma?
We install all three. Here's the honest field comparison from 30+ years on Oklahoma roofs.
What we install (and why)
We're certified installers for GAF, Owens Corning, and CertainTeed — the three biggest names in North American shingle. Being certified by all three means we install each system to the manufacturer's own specifications — which is what keeps your shingle warranty options open.
Performance in Oklahoma — what 30+ years has taught us
Marketing brochures will tell you everything is 'the best.' Field data tells you which products actually last in a state where the average roof takes 4-7 hail events in its lifetime. Here's our honest take after walking thousands of Tulsa roofs:
- GAF Timberline HDZ: dollar-for-dollar the best mid-tier shingle on Oklahoma roofs. Excellent granule retention, wide color palette, and the LayerLock seal handles wind well.
- Owens Corning Duration: SureNail strip is genuinely innovative. Best wind-resistance ratings in the architectural class. A favorite for exposed Owasso and Glenpool homes.
- CertainTeed Landmark: classic look, very dependable. Quieter granules — better in heat-aging tests.
- GAF Grand Sequoia / Camelot II: if you want a designer look with serious storm resistance. Heavier shingle = better hail performance.
- Class 4 Impact (any brand): if you've had two claims in 5 years, this is your move. 15-35% insurance discount typically pays for the upgrade in 4-7 years.
The 'cheap' shingles to avoid
Three-tab shingles are still legal to install in Oklahoma but we won't do it. They're 25-year products that act like 12-year products here. The savings versus architectural ($800–$1,200 on a typical home) disappear at the first hail claim.
Underlayment, flashing, ventilation
A great shingle on a mediocre system still fails early. Synthetic underlayment, full ice-and-water shield in valleys and around all penetrations, kick-out flashing at every wall termination, and proper ridge-and-soffit ventilation are non-negotiable on every install we do.
