Roof Ventilation
Just like you need some fresh air when it gets stuffy inside, your roof needs proper ventilation for top-notch performance. We’ve seen first-hand how improper roof ventilation or none at all can prematurely deteriorate your roof deck and shingles, and cause serious problems inside the home, too. It’s definitely not an area where you want to cut corners to save money.
Based on the questions we receive from homeowners, roof venting is a perplexing topic. So we thought it’s time to demystify roof ventilation systems with these frequently asked questions to help you better understand what roof vents are all about and why they are important to not only your roof, but your entire home as well.
WHAT IS ROOF VENTILATION?
Roof ventilation is a system that allows for air exchange, or more exact, the proper balance of air flowing in and out. A roof ventilation system is comprised of intake vents typically located on the lower end of the roof and outtake vents that are positioned higher on the roof.
WHAT PURPOSE DO ROOF VENTS SERVE?
Roofing vents reduce heat and moisture build-up in your home. In doing so, they lessen the opportunity for condensation to form, the main culprit of mold and mildew in a home. In cold weather climates, roof ventilation is the key to preventing ice dams that could cause a roof collapse. In hot climates, roof vents prevent roofing shingles from getting too hot and cracking by releasing accumulated attic air.
WHAT COULD HAPPEN WITHOUT A ROOF VENTILATION SYSTEM?
Some pretty serious damage. For starters, you’ll be needing frequent roof maintenance and repairs because inadequate ventilation weakens the durability of your roof and hastens its deterioration. Furthermore, trapped moisture damages roof decking and shingles and also causes metal to rust, including roofing nails used to secure your roof. A lack of roof ventilation also leads to heating and cooling problems in your home, usually resulting in high energy bills. The humidity in your home will also rise, creating poor indoor air quality, peeling paint, wood rot and expensive structural problems.
ARE THERE DIFFERENT TYPES OF ROOF VENTS?
There are numerous types of vents for roofs, such as ridge vents, roof fans, roof louvers, gable louvers, power fans and turbines. But no need to worry about how they all function or figuring out which one you need. Maxx Roofing will help you determine which venting system is right for your roof based on its size, shape, roofing material and the air space below your roof, such as an attic, and its ventilation system. Speaking of attics, learn how a poorly ventilated attic can harm your roof, too.
